Flat-Top Scattering Metasurface for Extending Next Generation Mobile Communication Coverage

This paper presents a flat-top scattering metasurface for extending the next-generation mobile communication coverage. The scattering metasurface can be modeled using an array model, and the reflection phases of the unit cells are optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The optimized scattering metasurfaces are verified in full-wave simulation. The simulation results show that this approach is valid for both normal (i.e., <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\boldsymbol{\theta}_{i}=\mathbf{0}^{\circ}$</tex>) and oblique incidence (i.e., <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\boldsymbol{\theta}_{i}=\mathbf{15}^{\circ}$</tex>, 30°, and 45°).
