Fuel Efficiency and Safety Enhancing in Civil Aviation through Optimized Holding Trajectories

This paper addresses fuel efficiency and fuel safety in civil aviation through the optimization of holding trajectories. Using aircraft Quick Access Recorder data and flight simulation, this paper propose a trajectory identification algorithm to analyze holding patterns’ frequency, duration, and fuel consumption. Optimal and worst-case holding models are derived, revealing potential fuel-saving opportunities. Validation through a Level D flight simulator examines factors affecting fuel consumption during holding. Our approach offers a practical tool for identifying fuel-efficient holding patterns, benefiting flight planning, cost reduction, and fuel safety. The research contributes insights into fuel-saving potential, enhancing aviation’s economic and safety.
