Experimental study on transient characteristics of on-load tap-changer thyristor selection

This paper addresses the transient characteristics and response optimization of on-load tap-changer (OLTC) thyristor-based systems under dynamic load conditions. The primary focus of this study is to enhance control strategies that mitigate transient effects, specifically voltage and current spikes, commonly observed during rapid load fluctuations in power systems. A new control methodology based on advanced thyristor triggering and gating techniques was proposed and evaluated experimentally. Various dynamic scenarios were tested to assess the method’s effectiveness, including abrupt load increases, decreases, and continuous fluctuations. Experimental validation, under scenarios of abrupt load increases and continuous fluctuations, shows peak current stabilization within $\pm 2 \mathrm{~A}$.
