Enhancing Coverage in Shadow Areas with 5G mmWave 2-bit Dual-Polarized Reprogrammable Coding Metasurface
5G wireless communication is a promising next-generation technology that offers fast, low-latency connections. However, due to the high path loss and penetration loss of 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals, shadow areas can easily occur where the mmWave signal cannot reach. Recently, there has been growing interest in using reprogrammable coding metasurfaces to compensate for these shadow areas. In this paper, we propose a reprogrammable coding metasurface in the mmWave band. The proposed metasurface unit cell consists of multiple divided resonant structures and four PIN diodes. This structure can maintain consistent performance for both vertical and horizontal polarizations, achieving 2-bit phase re-configurability. The performance of the proposed metasurface was analyzed through electromagnetic simulation of the unit cell, which was then used to validate the performance of the full structure. The full structure simulation was conducted using this design to demonstrate its capabilities in reflection, single-beam, and dual-beam configurations.
