Data Performativity Rearranged through the Historization of Memory—Focusing on the Works of Kimura Byol-nathalie Lemoine, Dian Volshay Rim

This paper focuses on the works of Dian Volshay Rim, Kimura Byol-nathalie Lemoine, which were featured in the screening “Traces Beyond the Wandering Memories: 70 Years of Korean Adoption,” held as part of the Cinemedia Curating Forum during the 24th Seoul International Alt-Cinema & Media Festival under the theme “Anchored Data, Wandering Memory” Through these works, the paper explores the characteristics of data that can be reconstructed and restored through the memories of international adoptees, and examines the potential performativity of the medium of data. Specifically, it will look at how data such as adoptee photographs, historical newsreels, advertisements, home movies, articles, and photographs are rearranged to restore the forgotten memories of international adoptees and are re-articulated and re-metaphored from the perspective of the subjects themselves. The paper will trace how the performative apparatus of these media helps to recover the historicity of minorities and restore their lost identities.
