Newborn baby with single eye, cyclopia, a rare and lethal malformation.

Cyclopia is a rare facial malformation, a severe form of alobar holoprosencephaly. The two orbits fuse together, resulting in a single eye occupying the middle of the forehead. Cyclopia is linked to the absence of development of the frontal bud, which is part of ectroprosopia. Diagnosis is possible by antenatal ultrasound. Cyclopia is a malformation incompatible with life. We report the case of a 1-day-old newborn, admitted for the treatment of cyclopia at birth. Newborn O, male, 1 day old, from a 38- week + 2-day pregnancy, born vaginally, dystocic delivery, weight 2900 g, Apgar: 2/10, 3/10, 3/10, Mother: G3/P3, no consanguinity, the mother had no antenatal follow-up, no malformations in the siblings. Clinical Examination found apparent death, then after resuscitation measures: Facial cyanosis, polypnea, moderate respiratory distress, and slight axial hypotonia. Cardiac auscultation was normal, permeable choanae and esophagus with a head circumference at 36 cm, a large single eye occupying the middle of the face and a total absence of the nose and orbits suggesting the diagnosis of cyclopia. Death occured after 16 minutes of birth, No biological and radiological investigations were be carried out because of the very early death. This case reveals the interest in raising awareness among parents about the importance of monitoring the pregnancy, and the interest in psychological support for parents, especially young people, in the event of a rare malformation incompatible with life.
