Particle Swarm Optimization for Comprehensive Fault Management in Microgrid System

This paper presents Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for identifying system faults and solving Unit Commitment (UC) problem. A system comprising ten subsystems is considered. Each subsystem comprises PV, battery, and Micro Gas Turbine. In this work, we designed a microgrid system, that schedules the generation units operation one day ahead. The microgrid can self-adjust its operation in response to any fault occurring within the generation subsystem. This system is operated in standalone mode only. A fault was created randomly in one of the generation system. PSO can recommend alternative subsystems for compensating the lost generation. Photovoltaic generation was considered as the primary energy source due to its environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. This algorithm was used to adjust the generating units and oversee the operation of subsystems based on load demand. PSO employed Micro Gas Turbines only after utilizing all PV and battery from all subsystems. Simulations were conducted using MATLAB software to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.
