The Women Who Appeared and Disappeared in TV Series Pachinko

This study examines the Apple TV+ series < Pachinko > and the original novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, focusing particularly on the TV series and examining it with the keywords of women or ‘Korean Japanese women.’The paper focuses on the characteristics of Sunja, a 1st generation Zainichi woman, the sisterhood between her and Kyunghee, Sunja’s role as a mother to 2nd generation Zainichis, and her relationship with 3rd generation as a grandmother. In addition, it examines Phoebe, a 3rd generation immigrant woman who appears in the TV series but not in the novel, and Han Geum Ja, a 1st generation immigrant woman who does not appear in the TV series but does appear in the novel. In doing so, it explores how female immigrants are represented on screen. The insights gained through the results of this study will acknowledge that the TV series does a good job of presenting a new narrative of Asian female immigrants, while at the same time providing an opportunity to reexamine the specificity of the ‘Pachinko’ story in the process of glocalization by multinational corporations.
