A Study on Issues and Improvement in Online Election Coverage in South Korea: An Analysis of Deliberations from the 17th to the 22nd General Election Reports

This study analyzes the deliberations on general election reporting to identify issues in internet newspaper coverage. By comparing regulations of various deliberation commissions and evaluating results from the 17th to 22nd general elections, the study assesses instances of duplicate deliberations. Although the commissions share similar regulations on key principles like fairness, balance, and objectivity, differences exist in detailed criteria. A significant rise in violations related to fairness and balance was observed, while violations concerning opinion polls and objectivity slightly decreased. The proportion of severe violations decreased, but there was an increase in 'requests for compliance with fair reporting' due to reporting volume imbalances. Additionally, duplicate deliberations were noted in the 22nd election, with varying actions taken by commissions. The study suggests improvements for election reporting and the deliberation system.
