Dagaya's Negotiations with the Namje and the Meaning of the Bonkukwang(本國王)

This article examines how Daegaya was able to negotiate with Namje in the international situation of the 5th century, and what the title of “Bonkukwang(本國王)” as a result of the negotiations meant to Daegaya. Although it is sometimes assumed that Geumgwanguk negotiated with Namje based on the title of “Bokukgukgun Bongukwang(輔國將軍 本國王)” by Namje, or that Anra negotiated with Namje based on recent excavations, Garaguk in “Namjeseo” is identified as Daegaya. There are varying opinions on Daegaya's negotiation route for the Namje, but the route from the Korean Peninsula to China was via the west coast, which was Baekje territory. Given the close relationship between Daegaya and Baekje at the time, it is likely that Daegaya sent envoys to the Namje with the help of Baekje. It can be said that Daegaya's external achievement of receiving the appointment title from Namje was a success. Internally, it also symbolizes the growth and development of Daegaya. The title of “Bonkukwang” may have been used within the sphere of influence of Daegaya, but it was limited to Daegaya. Based on this, it is difficult to understand that Daegaya dominated the foreign negotiations of the Gaya countries or led the Gaya countries. In other words, the title of “Bonkukwang” could not have influenced other Gaya regions beyond Daegaya's sphere of influence.

Abstract

This article examines how Daegaya was able to negotiate with Namje in the international situation of the 5th century, and what the title of “Bonkukwang(本國王)” as a result of the negotiations meant to Daegaya. Although it is sometimes assumed that Geumgwanguk negotiated with Namje based on the title of “Bokukgukgun Bongukwang(輔國將軍 本國王)” by Namje, or that Anra negotiated with Namje based on recent excavations, Garaguk in “Namjeseo” is identified as Daegaya.
