Influence of Nanosized Cerium Dioxide on Metabolic Changes of the Liver under Conditions of Chronic Alcoholic Hepatitis

Background: Alcoholic liver disease is one of the most common diseases in the world, leading to oxidative stress and inflammation. Antioxidants can protect against oxidative stress and resolve inflammation. The purpose of this work is to study the effect of nanosized cerium dioxide on the liver of rats under conditions of chronic alcohol hepatitis modeling. Methods: The study was conducted on 24 male Wistar rats, divided into I – control; II – nanosized cerium dioxide group (1mg/kg); III – chronic alcoholic hepatitis group; and IV – received nanosized cerium dioxide during chronic alcoholic hepatitis modeling. Indicators of pro- and antioxidant balance, NO-cycle, and markers of extracellular matrix metabolism were studied in the liver. Results: Usage of NCD during chronic alcoholic hepatitis decreased the concentration of peroxynitrite by 1.25 times, oxidatively modified proteins decreased by 3.82 times, sialic acids decreased by 1.86 times, and oxyproline decreased by 1.57 times. Conclusions: Intragastric administration of nanosized cerium dioxide at a dose of 1mg/kg for the correction of metabolic changes in the liver of rats under conditions of chronic alcohol intoxication limits ethanol-induced protein damage, peroxynitrite production and reduces collagenolysis and catabolism of non-collagenous proteins of extracellular matrix of the liver.
