RELEVANT METHODS OF TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN A NON-LINGUISTIC UNIVERSITY

The article presents a brief overview of modern active methods of teaching a foreign language in a non-linguistic university to students in the main educational programs of non-linguistic areas of training and specialties. The main attention is paid to such methods as case study and the project method. The analysis of theoretical sources and the experience of pedagogical activity allowed the authors to identify the main advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods under consideration. Case study promotes the development of students’ ability to think critically and apply theoretical knowledge in practice, but requires significant time resources and training of both the educator and students. The project method promotes the development of communicative and organizational skills, but does not involve an in-depth study of grammatical material. The use of information and communication technologies in combination with selected teaching methods gives opportunities for individualization of the educational process, but requires educators to have a sufficiently formed level of technical literacy. The article analyses the results of questionnaire survey of students of theMathematics Department and the Institute of Law of Chelyabinsk State University. The data obtained allow the authors to identify the features of the use of selected teaching methods in the context of different areas of training at the university. The authors come to the conclusion that the application of the considered teaching methods contributes to the improvement of the quality of foreign language training of students in non-linguistic areas of training at the university, but requires careful adaptation of their use in specific conditions of teaching a foreign language. Evaluation of the results of personal development of students in a foreign language at a non-linguistic university when implementing the selected teaching methods presents prospects for further research.
