Noise-Aware Compilation Techniques for Enhanced Fault-Tolerant Preparation of Polar Code States

We demonstrate the benefits of combining noise-aware compilation techniques with quantum error correction on NISQ devices. To this end, we consider the fault-tolerant preparation of quantum polar code states, implemented on two IBM devices based on superconducting qubits. Experimental results show that our noise-aware compilation approach yields significant improvements in the preparation rate, compared to non-noise-aware implementations on the same devices. In particular, the combination of the techniques considered in this work yields savings in space and time resources from 23 % to 81 %, for the implementation of fault-tolerant preparation protocols of polar codes with 6 to 24 physical qubits.
