Techno-Economic Assessment of Hybrid Off Grid AC-DC Microgrid: A Desert Area Case Study

This paper conducts the techno-economic assessment of an AC/DC off grid hybrid microgrid arrangement mainly designed for the desert location of Quseir, Egypt. This system integrates wind turbines, diesel generators, batteries, photovoltaic, and converters to fulfill the power demand of 257.1 kWh/day in the selected site. Using the HOMER Pro simulation, the designed scheme evaluates according to the cost of electricity, renewable fraction, and loss of power system probability. The simulation results show that the combination of diesel generators, wind turbines, photovoltaic, converter, and batteries effectively satisfies the load demand. In the Quseir area, the most optimal arrangement includes diesel generators of 15 kW, wind turbines of 20 kW, 20 kW solar PV, 40 kW converters, and 80 kW batteries. This configuration has the lowest net present cost of 169,800 $ and an energy cost of 0.140 $/kWh, with a renewable fraction of 82.4%.
