Digital Analysis of the Historical Utilization of Houxi (SI 3) by Medical Practitioners

In this study, we conducted a comprehensive search of ancient literature on the clinical application of the Houxi (SI 3) using the "Chinese Medicine Think Tank" and other specialized platforms, with "Houxi (SI 3)" as our primary search term. We extracted 612 entries from 70 ancient texts and compiled them into a foundational database. Utilizing advanced computational techniques and statistical methods, we performed feature analyses that established clinical guidelines for needling and moxibustion associated with the Houxi (SI 3), highlighting key treatment indications and combinations. Our findings revealed that common needling techniques involved depths of one fen, supplemented by two fen, typical moxibustion dosages were generally one zhuang, with additional dosages ranging from three to seven zhuang. Single-acupoint treatments addressed 90 diseases across 775 occurrences, while combination treatments encompassed 148 diseases over 678 occurrences. Analysis identified a total of 172 combination acupoints across 1591 instances, emphasizing concentrations in limbs as well as head and neck areas. Our investigation underscored that the clinical efficacy of the Houxi (SI 3) is particularly pronounced in treating ailments affecting the head, face, neck, limbs along with neurological disorders. it serves functions such as enhancing mental clarity and relieving wind-heat.
