The Concept of One Nation, One Election in Indian Democracy: A Study of Benefits, Challenges, and Feasibility

This study highlights that the concept of "One Nation, One Election" (simultaneous elections) in India aims to conduct Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together. This idea is regarded as a significant effort to enhance efficiency and conserve resources in Indian democracy. In the current system, the frequent conduct of elections disrupts governance repeatedly and leads to excessive expenditure of economic resources. The research presents a comprehensive analysis of the potential benefits, challenges, and feasibility of "One Nation, One Election." The potential benefits include economic savings, governance stability, simplification of the election process, and a focused approach to developmental activities. It can also reduce administrative obstacles caused by the frequent imposition of the Model Code of Conduct during elections. However, there are several challenges in implementing this concept. These include the need for constitutional amendments, disagreements among political parties, and issues arising from differing timelines and concerns of states, making the process complex. Furthermore, coordinating the electoral cycles and priorities of various states is a challenging task. The study concludes that, from a long-term perspective, this idea can make the democratic system more organized and empowered. However, its implementation requires political consensus, administrative reforms, and essential amendments to the constitutional framework.
