Wireless Communication challenges in Electric Vehicle Battery Pack Environment
Recent trends in Automotive EV (Electric Vehicle) market shows that most of the Electric vehicles in the future will be equipped with WBMS (Wireless Battery management system). The Cost of EVs has been a concern to the users and the WBMS helps OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to reduce the cost of EVs. The WBMS eliminates the cable harness and connectors between the CMC (Cell monitoring circuit boards) and main MMC (main monitor controller board) which contributes to cost reduction. Certainly, there are challenges in the design of the wireless front end for the battery management system. Establishing the communication between CMCs and MMC would be a challenge in the battery pack environment. This paper describes the challenges of wireless communication inside the battery pack compared to wired BMS. The design of the antenna and RF (Radio frequency) front end is one of the important factors to overcome the interference effects inside the battery pack. Before implementing or designing the CMCs/MMC boards, the electromagnetic simulations give an idea to the designer on the placement of antenna inside the battery pack for reliable communication between the boards.
