Scenario-2: Platooning Vehicles will Not Pass the Intersection, Relative Position and Timing Analysis
The concepts of connected automotive vehicles (CAVs) and intelligent transport systems (ITS) facilitate the sharing of information between vehicles and infrastructure. In CAVs, vehicles moving in close proximity and at higher speeds, termed vehicles in platooning (ViP), exchange speed, braking, and other necessary information through vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V). The exchange of this information between vehicles and infrastructure, known as vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, is also integral. When ViP approaches a traffic intersection at a certain speed and fails to recognize traffic signals, red light violation warning (RLVW) is triggered. This research addresses scenario-2 in the RLVW application, where ViP are at the edge of the decision region and will not pass through the intersection as the traffic signal changes from green to green-amber. Crucial data related to speed, braking, and traffic signals are exchanged between myRIO units placed in electric vehicles and myRIO units acting as roadside units (RSUs). Specific conditions related to scenario-2 RLVW application are investigated by considering the relative movement and timing analysis of ViP. Experimental simulation research has validated Wi-Fi as an effective and efficient communication medium for future studies.
