An Organic Transistor on Paper for Real-time Breath Monitoring

By incorporating nature-inspired materials into electronic device production, we contribute to the development of eco-friendly, biodegradable systems that aid in minimizing electronic waste. In this study, we have highlighted gelatin, a natural protein, as an exceptionally biocompatible gate dielectric material for solution-processed, low-voltage, high-performance, flexible OFETs on a biodegradable paper substrate. The fabricated devices exhibit excellent transistor properties with a low operating voltage of -5 V. These devices have proven effective as a humidity sensor and have been successfully utilized as a breath rate analyzer, showcasing rapid response and recovery times. In addition, the paper-based OFETs have demonstrated encouraging outcomes when evaluated for flexible circuit applications using a resistive load inverter circuit.
