A Comparative Study of V-shaped IPMSMs with Asymmetric and Symmetric Rotors

This paper presents a comparative analysis of three interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) featuring distinct rotor configurations, including symmetric rotor IPM, asymmetric rotor IPM, and asymmetric IPM equipped with hybrid permanent magnets. With a unified stator structure and consistent testing conditions, the air-gap magnetic field performance, torque output characteristics, operation efficiency map, demagnetization performance, mechanical stress, and manufacturing cost are thoroughly compared. Based on the above evaluation, the advantages of asymmetric rotor design using magnetic field shift (MFS) effect and hybrid permanent magnets are verified, particularly in enhancing torque density and suppressing torque ripple. Ultimately, this study comprehensively evaluates three topologies and identifies directions for future design improvements.
