The Heat of Alloy Formation Determined from XPS and TDS Measurements
The interaction between Zn atoms and Pd(lOO) single crystal surface has been studied by electron spectroscopic methods. The broadening of the Pd <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(3\mathrm{d}_{5/2})$</tex> XPS signal (X-ray Photon Electron Spectroscopy) gave us the opportunity to calculate the enthalpy of alloy formation between Pd and Zn. The advantage of this methods is that one could investigate the interaction between the two metals whether in nano meter size, small amount or even bulk. The separation of these particles or in the presence of other metals, chemical elements, catalysts support are less important. Another benefit is that beside the XPS spectroscopy one could combine them by Auger-, ultraviolet photoelectron work function measurements and mass spectroscopy.
