Rotor Position Sensing in Switched Reluctance Motors Using Magnetostrictive Amorphous Wire

There has been continuous, extensive research on rotor position estimation and determination using different techniques. Discrete sensors and indirect rotor position estimators have merits and drawbacks depending on speed ranges, size of motor and principle of operation. To solve the problem of speed range limitation experienced with sensorless methods and reduction of reliability under high temperatures for hall sensors and optical encoders, this work investigates the practicability of a new method of rotor position determination for Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM). The results show that that the EMF distribution according to the rotor positions can be acquired by measuring the pick-up coils’ EMFs. It is observed that the amplitude of the induced EMF varies according to the rotor position.
