LiDAR on a Budget: Driving Global Safety Innovations Across Developing Countries

The adoption of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology in vehicular safety systems, notably Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS), has predominantly been a feature of vehicles in developed countries, facilitated by the technology's advanced capabilities and effectiveness. However, the high cost of LiDAR sensors has significantly limited their integration into vehicles in developing countries. This paper addresses this challenge by exploring the development and implementation of a cost-effective LiDAR-based CAS. By demonstrating the feasibility of using budget-conscious LiDAR sensors, this study aims to achieve substantial improvements in traffic safety without incurring the premium costs typically associated with these systems. The detailed processes of system design, sensor integration and empirical validation highlighted in this research underscore the potential for advanced safety systems to become more accessible and economically viable across a broader geographic spectrum.
