Enhancing Dermatological Diagnosis: A Deep Dive For Skin Lesion Classification

The early and accurate diagnosis of skin lesions, particularly malignant melanoma, is crucial for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes. This study aims to enhance dermatological diagnosis by implementing a deep learning approach utilizing the HAM10000 dataset, a comprehensive collection of dermatoscopic images. Our model employs gradual scaling and unfreezing strategies to progressively fine-tune and improve its ability to distinguish among various skin lesion types. Data augmentation and rigorous metric evaluations were integrated to bolster model durability and classification accuracy. While our approach shows promise in enhancing lesion classification, the challenge of accurately identifying malignant melanoma remains significant, underscoring the necessity for further research. Our findings demonstrate that progressive scaling and unfreezing techniques can significantly advance dermatological diagnostics, highlighting the value of continued innovation in AI-based methods to refine discriminatory capabilities and facilitate more effective therapeutic applications.
