A Comparative Study of Hall Sensor-based Trapezoidal and Sinusoidal Control on BLDC Using dsPIC33C
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have gained significant prominence in various industrial and automotive applications due to their high efficiency and precise control capabilities. Although they are efficient when compared to Brushed DC motor their control algorithms are more complex and require a inverter for switching. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the choice of control strategy impacts motor behavior and efficiency. A MATLAB Simulink model is developed to implement the trapezoidal and sinusoidal control on a BLDC motor for proof of concept. These techniques are then implemented on to hardware with dsPIC33C based-Low Voltage Motor Control (LVMC) board and MPLAB X IDE. The objective of this paper is to compare the performance and efficiency of trapezoidal and sinusoidal control methods on a BLDC motor having hall sensors to detect the rotor position. The trapezoidal and sinusoidal control algorithms are compared by loading the motor on Magtrol hysteresis load dynamometer. The obtained results are tabulated and are plotted. The results of comparative study offer valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of Trapezoidal and Sinusoidal control methods in real-world BLDC motor applications.
