VisuAid: Novel Web Application Utilising Smart Glasses for Low Vision Individuals

VisuAid is an inventive web application targeting to help low vision people to increase independence and safety which is enabled through using computer vision and deep learning. Through smart glasses with built-in sensors, the system combines object detection algorithms such as YOLO, Tesseract OCR for text detection, and depth estimation to output audio in real-time, informing users about their environment. It converts visual information into audio cues and, thereby, bridges the sensory gap for low vision people. Therefore, it enables them to understand their surroundings in a better way. The system features include real-time image detection, object identification, and text recognition, with a focus on creating an instinctive user-friendly assistive technology that increases awareness and self-reliance. Early user satisfaction metrics point to the system's possibility of significantly makes the lives of the visually impaired people much easier every day.
