Enhancing Producer Mobility Management in Named Data Networking: Insights from Design Research Methodology

The current Internet landscape is dominated by cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoI’), the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), and the Internet of Everything (IoE). These technologies generate vast amounts of data traffic, necessitating new network architectures for efficient content distribution and low-latency access. Named Data Networking (NDN) stands out as a well-designed architecture within the realm of Information-Centric Networking (ICN), particularly for supporting content distribution during user mobility. NDN's consumer mobility benefits from its inherent data structure, which allows for effective content retrieval through caching. However, managing producer mobility presents significant challenges, particularly due to the frequent relocation of producers across various access points. This paper conducts a thorough factor analysis of producer mobility, presenting an initial reference model and impact model that align with a conceptual framework in a systematic manner. Additionally, it explores the influencing factors and the impact model to address current concerns and propose effective solutions. The performance of the proposed mobile producer model is evaluated through various benchmarking studies, focusing on handoff latency within a network analysis framework. Furthermore, the paper summarizes key research problems and persistent challenges associated with different producer mobility management models, offering insightful directions based on the results of the network analysis.
