Comparison of wind velocities measured by high resolution bistatic wind lidar and 3D scanning coherent lidar

Comparative measurements are carried out between PTB's bistatic wind lidar as a reference instrument and LEONARDO's SKIRON 3D scanning wind lidar. Both systems are located 1100 m apart and are aligned to the same measurement volume. Based on the high-resolution velocity vector measured by the PTB lidar, the velocity component in the line-of-sight direction of the scanning lidar is calculated and compared to the scalar component measured by the scanning lidar. Additionally, volume scans are performed by the scanning lidar to determine time-averaged velocity vector fields. At heights of 50 m and 100 m and for a five-minute averaging interval, very good correlations are achieved for the radial velocity components for all pulse lengths of the scanning lidar. The upper limit of the precision of the pulsed system is determined to be less than 0.1 m/s. At a height of 100 m and for a two-minute averaging interval, good correlations are achieved for the time-averaged vectorial comparison utilizing the Volume Velocity Processing (VVP) method.
