Postacie świętych jezuickich w dominikańskiej parenezie na przykładzie kazań Fabiana Birkowskiego
Fabian Birkowski is considered as one of the most outstanding Polish preachers of the post-Tridentine era. Although he was a member of the Dominican Order, he is believed to have been also closely affiliated with the Society of Jesus. This was evidenced in the sermon delivered by the Jesuit Adam Makowski during Birkowski’s funeral. Therefore, this paper is an attempt at interpreting the Dominican preacher’s writings concerning the saints of the Society of Jesus. The article demonstrates the versatility of the themes which Birkowski used when presenting the figures of the Jesuit saints as well as the abundance of means of artistic expression which he employed. These are particularly numerous in his Latin oration on Saint Francis Xavier, which serves as an example of the use of marine metaphors in reference to missionary themes. This is an interesting application of this type of metaphors, as they typically have been used in literature in other contexts.
