Examining The Impact Of Gender Quotas On Women's Political Representation In Indian State Legislatures
The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth investigation into the effect that gender quotas have on increasing the number of women who hold political positions in Indian state legislatures. The objective of this study is to determine whether the installation of gender quotas has resulted in a significant increase in the number of female lawmakers, as well as to determine how this has impacted the role and influence that women hold within these legislative bodies. The research makes use of a mixed-methods methodology, which combines qualitative insights acquired through interviews with female lawmakers with quantitative analysis of statistical data collected from a variety of Indian state legislatures over the course of the past two decades.Tracking changes in the representation of women both before and after the establishment of gender quotas is the primary focus of the quantitative element of the discussion. The qualitative analysis, on the other hand, investigates the experiences and perspectives of female lawmakers, evaluating the ways in which gender quotas have impacted their political careers and the efficiency of their legislative work. The most important findings of the study demonstrate that gender quotas have a subtle impact: although there has been a discernible improvement in the numerical representation of women, there are still issues to be faced in terms of substantive representation and influence within legislative processes.Furthermore, the paper concludes that gender quotas, even though they are an essential step toward achieving gender parity in political representation, must be supplemented by more comprehensive institutional reforms to successfully empower women legislators.
