Leptin-loaded Extracellular Vesicles Treat Sleep-disordered Breathing in Mice with Obesity
Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), obstructive sleep apnea, and obesity hypoventilation are highly prevalent in obesity and have no effective pharmacotherapy. Leptin is a powerful stimulant of ventilatory control and upper airway patency during sleep. Individuals with obesity have high circulating leptin concentrations but are resistant to its beneficial metabolic and respiratory effects. One of the key mechanisms of leptin resistance is the limited permeability of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) to leptin. Leptin resistance has been implicated in the pathogenesis of SDB.
