Crosstalk between bone and vasculature within bone

Bone is a highly vascularized connective tissue, and its physiological and pathological processes are closely linked to the vascular system. The vasculature system should include the blood vessel system and the lymphatic system, while the majority of previous reviews only discuss the relationship between bone and blood vessels. Vascular vessels travel through the bone and constitute the bone microenvironment together with the bone structure. The paracrine function of the vasculature is essential for bone development, homeostasis, regeneration, modeling, and remodeling. Osteolineage cells also regulate the physiologic activity of the vascular system. Complex signaling crosstalk exists between the vascular system and bone and together coordinate the dynamic processes of bone formation and bone resorption. In addition, targeting based on the skeletal-vasculature axis also provides new strategies for the therapy of related diseases.
