The above-mentioned quote clearly sums up the objective of the education system in India since the ancient and Vedic ages. The education system in India was one of its kind where the student lived with the guru (meaning teacher) in the Gurukul (ancient Indian education system where students live with their guru and learn from them) and received education in a more natural environment however with the passage of time the education system was more formalized with the establishment of the various institutions and the teaching-learning process changed completely more so with the coming up of the Britishers in India where the indigenous system was completely shattered and English system of education was introduced. The paper, therefore, covers the evolution of the education system in India and discuss the changes that have undergone especially after the independence, and how it underwent modifications to suit the changing needs of the time. Several commissions were established to undertake this task of conducting several studies and come up with suitable suggestions. This paper covers some of the important commissions that have shaped the future of Indian education system.
