Comparison of the Procedures for Calculating the Wind Turbine Aerodynamic Shading on the Wind Farm Site

The article discusses the main procedures for calculating the wind turbine aerodynamic shading used in computer programs for wind energy calculations to assess the electric power generation by a wind turbine and its annual electricity production. The article focuses on two wind turbine empirical wake models used in the most common computer-aided design (CAD) software products in the international market of wind power systems: N.O. Jensen’s model, which is the basic one in the PARK module of the WindPRO software package, and the I. Katić’s model, which is the basic model in the WAsP computer program. A detailed analysis of the considered models is provided, with a description of the parameters used in them. Based on a comparative calculation of both the wind turbine wake empirical models, for which the wind farm in the Ust-Kamchatsk settlement was taken as an example, it has been found that the I. Katić model yields better accuracy, while the use of the N.O. Jensen model in wind energy calculations yields underestimation of the predicted wind turbine output for certain wind directions by more than 80%.
