Conducting a critical evaluation of the sustainable performance of Brazilian airports engaged in the Sustainable Aerodromes Project

As air transport continues its steady growth, the aviation industry stands as a significant contributor to environmental pollutants. Consequently, ensuring airport environmental sustainability becomes a crucial societal concern, impacting not just airport users but also the broader environment. This article aims to evaluate the sustainable performance of Brazilian airports concurrently engaged in both the second and third editions of the Sustainable Aerodromes Project by the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency. Additionally, our analysis examines areas requiring improvement to transform the project into an effective monitoring tool rather than solely a promotional instrument. To achieve this, establishing a comprehensive metric, refining assessment criteria, and leveraging the principles outlined in the 2030 Agenda becomes imperative in evaluating the sustainability of airports across Brazil. Emphasizing the necessity for annual airport registrations to enhance project efficiency, standardizing evaluation criteria between editions facilitates the comparison of airport progress over successive project cycles.
