Design of 4-bit multiplier from schematic to layout
The 4-bit multiplier signifies an essential milestone in digital technology, illustrating the shift from vacuum tube technology to solid-state electronics. This fundamental component has been critical in the miniaturisation and standardisation of computing systems, establishing a foundation for the digital revolution that has profoundly influenced contemporary industries and the education of future tech innovators. This paper explores a comprehensive design of a 4-bit multiplier, carefully constructing it from basic logic gates (Inverter, NAND, AND, XOR) to more advanced components such as the half adder, full adder, and the complete multiplier circuit. Besides, this paper encompasses schematic and layout designs, strict verification processes through Design Rule Check (DRC) and Layout Versus Schematic (LVS) assessments, alongside extensive simulation analysis to ensure functional precision and optimal performance. Moreover, this paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of various multiplier designs while exploring their diverse applications in state-of-the-art areas such as artificial intelligence, signal processing, and beyond.
