Design of high efficiency dual active bridge DC converter for aviation applications
In recent years, electric aircraft and laser weapons have witnessed significant advancements, fostering the widespread adoption of high-power energy storage systems in aviation. As the endurance and battery capacity of these systems continue to escalate, the focus shifts towards optimizing power density and system efficiency. Dual-active bridge (DAB) converters, renowned for their high power density, bidirectional power flow capabilities, and soft switching characteristics, have emerged as a pivota l link between energy storage systems and electric drive systems. This article delves into the two prevalent control strategies for DAB converters: Single Phase Shift (SPS) control and Double Phase Shift (DPS) control. It establishes mathematical models for power transfer and inductor current under these distinct control methodologies. A thorough analysis is conducted to illuminate the primary performance differences between converters operating under these controls. Furthermore, leveraging the latest high-frequency Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology, mathematical models are formulated to quantify converter losses. Experimental validation is subsequently undertaken to confirm that the theoretical predictions regarding power transfer and inductor current behavior under various control schemes align with the observed results. A comparative study is conducted, contrasting the efficiency of converters under SPS control, DPS control, and traditional Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) switching devices. Notably, the application of high-frequency SiC technology is found to significantly enhance the efficiency of converters, underscoring its potential to revolutionize the aviation and weaponry sectors.
