<i>p</i> ‐Orbital Ferromagnetism Arising from Unconventional O − Ionic State in a New Semiconductor Sr 2 AlO 4 with Insufficiently Bonded Oxygen (Adv. Sci. 1/2025)

p‐Orbital Ferromagnetism This image illustration features an unconventional O. ionic state producing p‐electron orbital ferromagnetism in a luminescent crystal. In the fiber‐like new semiconductor Sr(2)AlO(4) that emits green light upon a mechanical stimulus, one oxygen ion per Sr(2)AlO(4) is insufficiently bonded to the surrounding cations of Sr and Al, leading to the unconventional O(−) ionic state. Unlike a conventional O(2−) ionic state, wherein all electrons in its outer p orbitals are paired as ↑↓ ↑↓ ↑↓ with a null magnetic moment, the unconventional O(−) has one unpaired electron spin of ↑↓ ↑↓ ↑ to produce strong ferromagnetism persisting to a surprising high temperature. More details can be found in article number 2410977 by Xu‐Guang Zheng, Chao‐Nan Xu, and co‐workers. [Image: see text]

Abstract

p‐Orbital Ferromagnetism This image illustration features an unconventional O. ionic state producing p‐electron orbital ferromagnetism in a luminescent crystal.
