A coupled inductors-based bidirectional Γ-Z-source solid state circuit breaker with rebreaking capability

With the gradual development of more electric aircraft (MEA), the issue of airborne High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power supply system protection is increasingly evident. To guarantee the re-breaking capability of HVDC for short-circuit faults, this paper proposes a coupled inductor based bi-directional Γ-Z-source solid-state circuit breaker (ΓZSCB) with reclosing capabilities, in which a short-circuit energy recovery channel is constructed by multiplexing coupled inductors. ΓZSCB features repetitively re-breaking ability, smaller impact peak and lower control complexity. In this paper, a mathematical model is established by analysing the unique operating principle of the novel circuit breaker. In addition, Saber simulation is carried out to validate the topology autonomous shutdown characteristics and reclosing protection capability, and the effectiveness of the proposed topology along with the modelling method is verified.
