White sponge nevus (oral manifestation): a clinical case report

Relevance. White sponge nevus (WSN) is a rare benign hereditary autosomal-dominant disorder of the mucous membranes, marked by variable phenotypic expression due to genetic polymorphism. Recognizing the oral clinical manifestations of this condition is essential for accurate differential diagnosis and the selection of appropriate treatment strategies. Case description. This report presents a clinical case of white sponge nevus affecting the oral mucosa in a female patient. The condition manifested as diffuse, symmetrical, thickened, and folded white lesions on the buccal mucosa, lips, and lateral surfaces of the tongue. Conclusion. The proposed diagnostic algorithm facilitates the exclusion of malignant lesions in the oral mucosa, while also mitigating unnecessary concerns or inappropriate treatments for patients diagnosed with white sponge nevus.
