Exploring the Equivalence of MF-TDMA and OTDM-WDM: A Comparative Study and Prospects for Integration in DVB-RCS2 Networks

In the field of space telecommunications, it is crucial to understand how multiple users share the same radio frequency channel. The focus is often placed on resource allocation strategies, whether independent or combined. This article examines an intriguing alternative in this area by exploring the foundations of an emerging communication technique adapted to Multi-Frequency Time Division Multiple Access (MF-TDMA). This technique aligns with current satellite communication standards, particularly Digital Video Broadcasting - Return Channel via Satellite 2 (DVB-RCS2). Simultaneously, we present the design of an Optical Time-Division Multiplexing-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (OTDM-WDM) system. This system shares certain characteristics with MF-TDMA, notably through the presentation of specific architectures, output signals, and tilings. This approach addresses the growing demand for high data rates, substantial bandwidth, cost-effective implementation, and broader application scope. As a result, it has the potential to surpass traditional radio frequency channels, marking a pivotal shift in the emerging landscape of communication within DVB-RCS2 networks.
