Enhanced Performance of Wind Farm Systems with Multi-phase PMSGs using Backstepping Control
Given the increasing use of wind energy in power systems globally, Wind Farm Systems (WFS) need to actively engage in the operation of electric networks by using a suitable generation control strategy. The present article does a comparative analysis of two control systems used in a wind farm that utilizes 5-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs) and is linked to the distribution network. These generators are coupled to a common DC-bus system. Every PMSG in this system is connected to the DC-link by a rectifier. The DC bus is then linked to the electrical grid through a single inverter system. The control techniques offered use a Backstepping control algorithm (BSC) and Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers to effectively regulate both the generator and grid-side converters. The main goal of the control approach is to optimize power extraction in the presence of fluctuating wind speeds. The efficacy of the suggested technique is confirmed by simulation results acquired using the Matlab/Simulink environment, showcasing its exceptional performance. Keywords- 5-phase permanent magnet synchronous generators (5ph-PMSGs), Wind Farm System (WFS), Backstepping control (BSC), Proportional-Integral (PI).
