A Hybrid 60 GHz-mmWave/VLC System for 5G Access Networks

In this paper, we numerically investigated a hybrid $60 \mathrm{GHz}-\mathrm{mmWav} / \mathrm{VLC}$ system to achieve 5 G wireless access network performance, where the outdoor $60 \mathrm{GHz}-$ mmWave system is utilized to ensure backhaul connectivity for indoor VLC system. The hybrid system is analyzed using a 16-QAM-OFDM signal at bite rate of $100 \mathrm{Mb} / \mathrm{s}$ according to IEEE 802.11ad and IEEE 802.15.7 standards, respectively. The performance of the hybrid system is investigated by evaluating the quality of the received signal and its constellation diagram. The results show the efficiency of the hybrid system to transmit mmWave signals at 60 GHz frequency using visible optical carriers in the indoor environment, and therefore, the potential of VLC as an alternative to mmWave communications for indoor applications.
