Investigating a Concept for Planning Curative Remedial Actions with Redundancy

The increased demand for the transport of electrical energy in the European transmission grid in combination with delays in grid expansion leads to high volumes and costs for congestion management (CM). Curative congestion management (CCM) is therefore discussed as a suitable option to achieve a better utilization of existing transmission capacities. This brings the transmission grid closer to its physical limits, which means that aspects of grid security are increasingly coming into focus. Thus, one objective for the realization of CCM is to improve the reliability of curative remedial actions through redundancy. In this work, a concept to guarantee redundancy for curative remedial actions is proposed based on a deterministic redundancy criterion. We present a model formulation for the optimization of CCM considering the redundancy requirement as an additional restriction. The influence of the redundancy requirement on the efficiency of CCM is investigated by annual simulations of grid operation with a benchmark grid model. Depending on the detection time for a failure of a curative remedial action we find an increase in preventive CM volumes by 3.5 % to 12.9 % compared to the reference without redundancy requirement.
