Enhancing Fault Detection in Solar Photovoltaic Systems Using Multi-Modal Models
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are a significant renewable energy technology that contribute to sustainable electricity generation. Understanding and mitigating factors that degrade PV system performance is a key area of research. Common performance-degrading factors include surface defects like cracks and external impairments such as shadows, dust, and soiling on the panels. This study aims to introduce a novel approach using Multi-Modal models to detect physical faults on solar panels, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of fault detection methods currently in use. The proposed methodology involves the integration of Vision-language models that leverage both visual data from panel images and textual descriptions or metadata. This approach allows for a comprehensive analysis by jointly processing and learning from these diverse data formats. Preliminary findings suggest that the Multi-Modal approach can more effectively identify and classify various types of physical faults on solar panels compared to traditional single-mode image processing techniques. The ability of these models to utilize supplementary textual data provides a richer context for fault analysis, potentially leading to more accurate diagnostics. Multi-Modal models represent a promising advancement in the field of solar PV system maintenance. By effectively combining visual and textual data, these models offer potential improvements in the detection and classification of physical faults, thereby enhancing overall system efficiency and reliability.
