Reaching-Law Based Sliding Mode Control of a Stand-Alone Wind-Fed PMSG with Boost Converter

With the depletion of hydro-carbon based fuel, the world is shifting towards the renewable resources. The wind energy is a viable option as it is clean and abundantly available. However, there are challenges due to the stochastic nature of wind, such as power quality and voltage stability issues. In this paper, non-linear control is proposed to improve the voltage stability of the wind energy conversion system (WECS). An offshore wind turbine operating in stand-alone mode has been considered. The non-linear techniques used in this study are Sliding Mode Control (SMC), exponential (E-SMC) and power rate SMC (P-SMC). The controller makes the WECS insensitive to bounded disturbances. Two types of comparisons have been carried out in this paper. The first is between Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control and Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for a typical wind profile. The second is between SMC, E-SMC and P-SMC. The simulation results have been performed in MATLAB/Simulink to demonstrate the superior performance of the power rate-based SMC.
