Development of an algorithm for detecting rotor bar breakage in an induction generator

The use of self-excited induction generators for power generation is receiving particular attention due to their various advantages, including reduced maintenance costs and greater reliability compared with traditional generators. What’s more, their self-excitation capability enhances the energy efficiency of power generation systems. During operation, the self-excited induction generator may experience one or more faults that could have an impact on its performance. This article presents a study of the induction generator in a healthy state and discusses the presence of rotor bar fracture faults. We aim to develop a monitoring strategy to rapidly detect the presence of the fault as soon as it occurs. This monitoring strategy will be based on the spectral analysis of the generator’s stator current, a technique which has already demonstrated its effectiveness in the early detection of faults.
