Optimization of Dstatcom in Distribution Network for Performance Improvement
Modern distribution systems are faced with many Power Quality problems. Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) can be applied to solve some of these problems. This paper proposes Bat Algorithm (BA) to optimize the size and location of DSTATCOM in a power distribution network with the aim of reducing system losses and improving voltage profile. The load was varied from one model to another. Constant Power (CP), Constant Current (CI), Constant Impedance, (CZ) and Constant Impedance, Current and Power (ZIP) are the static load models that were considered in this work. In each loading condition, optimal values of size and location of DSTATCOM were obtained. This was achieved by programming the optimization problem on MATLAB 2020 software. The proposed technique was applied on IEEE 69-Bus System. Optimal DSTATCOM reduced active power losses by 53.0%, 51.1%, 42.9% and 52.6% for CP, CI, CZ and ZIP load models respectively. Further, the use of a single optimized DSTATCOM improved the system's voltage profile for all the different load models considered in this research. The minimum system's voltage magnitudes were improved by 7.1%, 5.5%, 4.2% and 6.6 % for CP, CI, CZ and ZIP load models. The results further showed that the use of multiple optimal DSTATCOM devices is beneficial to distribution companies.
