Trends in Day-Ahead Electricity Market Prices in Southern Africa

SAPP has operated a competitive day-ahead electricity market in Southern Africa since 2009. Prices from this market were investigated. This paper presents main conditions that influenced the prices. It was envisaged that understanding these conditions may assist concerned players in crafting good bids in electricity markets, negotiating prices in bilateral energy exchange contracts, or making investment decisions for energy projects in the region.
