Smart Monitoring and Control Systems for Rural Microgrids
This article presents a practical implementation of an off-grid microgrid system, focusing on configurations and considerations specific to rural applications. It details key design decisions related to communication, data acquisition, and modeling. A significant case study is included to demonstrate the capabilities of a fully operational off-grid Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS). The study discusses the benefits of smart microgrids, including operational cost savings, enhanced monitoring and control, and improved system reliability through autonomous functions. Insights from a pilot project utilizing solar photovoltaic technology are shared, highlighting system design, key results, and findings. The viability of off-grid and smart technologies in different modalities is explored, providing a comprehensive understanding of their application in enhancing rural electrification.
